GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) crops create fields that cannot support a healthy and natural ecosystem for plants and animals. Between the toxins produced by the GMO crops and the deadly herbicides and pesticides; plants, insects, and animals are either killed, harmed, or mutated. Also the application of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides pollute the air, water and soil with toxins and deadly chemicals that create catastrophic environmental and health problems.
Let’s recap- GMOs are organisms that are unnaturally altered by the forceful injection of foreign substances. These substances can range from pesticides to DNA. These GMOs are unnatural and spread unchecked via cross contamination, so it is near impossible to recall GMOs from the market. GMOs are not labeled in the United States and are in most processed foods. GMOs are linked to many chronic diseases and illnesses.
On top of all that, GMOs destroy healthy ecosystems that support plants and animals. In organic, sustainable fields, crops grow and thrive among diverse plants that many consider “weeds”. However, these “weeds” provide the crops and soil with beneficial byproducts, like nitrogen. Some attract helpful insects and animals.
In GMO fields, crops are constantly sprayed with herbicides that kill off most of these beneficial plants. So many farmers resort to chemical fertilizers to help supply the soil with synthetic nutrients. Because these fields suppress the natural growth of wild plants (the foundation of all ecosystems and food chains), insects and animals cannot survive and sustain themselves in these fields. With habitats being destroyed daily and now farming fields are hostile to animals, it is becoming so hard for animals to find places to survive.
Another adverse affect of GMO fields and the use of herbicides is the formation of “super weeds”. “Super weeds” are wild plants that that have become immune to the effects of herbicides. These “super-weeds” are invasive and are very hard to get rid of. They are like a virus that has mutated so that it is not effected by medicine. This becomes a problem for farmers alike and home owners too.
